Eligibility and document required for BIS-CRS Registration in India

BIS Certification stands for Bureau of India Standards, under the BIS Act, 1986. BIS is the prominent Indian certification body and has a significant role in regulating and managing the quality standards of consumer products listed under the Act. BIS is responsible for various activities like formulating the standards, schemes for registration, hallmark, certification of the system, certifying the products, laboratory services, and more.

What is BIS CRS Registration?

Chapter IVA of BIS Rules 1987 deals with the Compulsory Registration Schemes. MeitY introduced the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) in 2012 for the electronic and IT electronic goods. Presently, there are 49 goods that are categorized under this scheme that comprises electronic products like mobile phones, IT, audio and video equipments, LED Flood Lights, smart card readers, CCTV cameras, and other listed gadgets. All the manufacturers importing, selling or distributing goods has been notified by the authority to mandatorily apply for BIS Registration that confirms to the Indian Standard.

The manufacturers of listed products are mandatory to test their product from the BIS authorized labs and then apply for BIS Certification. The BIS authority then registers the manufacturers under the Compulsory registration scheme where they are allowed to assert that their articles are conforming to the Indian Standards. 

Who is eligible to apply for BIS- CRS Registration?

  • Manufacturers of products notified in Compulsory Registration Order located in India or outside India can apply for Registration under CRS.
  • Manufacturers have to apply for separate Registration number for products being manufactured at different locations.
  • Manufacturers have to apply for separate Registration number for each brand being manufactured at the same location.

BIS-CRS Registration in India

  • Manufactured are required to get the product test from the lab and apply for Registration along with mandatory documents.
  • As per the MeitY guidelines, the product will be submitted for testing to BIS acknowledged lab only.
  • The test report should not be more than 90 days during submission.

Documents Required

  • Address Proof- Business License or any other document issued by Govt
  • Registration certificate of the brand
  • Test Report of the lab
  • FORM VI Online generated copy (duly signed and sealed)
  • Certificate issued by the Registrar of Companies
  • An affidavit cum undertaking
  • Affidavit as per Format C

Conclusion

To standardize the product under the BIS Act, it is mandatory to obtain BIS-CRS Registration. Those manufacturers notified under the Bis must comply with the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme.
